Health Ed Keeping York Healthy!

I can't tell you the number of times I've heard people on campus complaining that there are no health info services on campus. The number of times I've heard people say they wish there was someplace people could go to get info on nutrition or stress management or sexual health is truly shocking!!

Look for the LOGO!!
For those of you that don't know, Health Education and Promotion is an organization whose mission is to provide York students with health info about different topics that are of importance in the lives of university students.

There are 10 different teams that cater to specific health topics and student needs, they are:
1. Active Living Team                                              6. Sexual Health and Healthy Relationship Team
2. Nutrition and Healthy Eating Team                      7. Peer S.H.O.P (Sexual Health Outreach Program
3. Leave the Pack Behind (Smoking cessation)        8. Men's Health Team
4. Stress Management and Mental Health Team       9. Glendon Campus Team
5. Alcohol and Other Drug Awareness Team         10. Health Education in Residence Team

As you can see Health Ed covers pretty much EVERYTHING you'll need to about health while you're at York. The best part about Health Ed in my opinion is the fact that they are a student staffed organization, all the people hosting the events and running them are other students. Students tend to be more comfortable talking about health issues with fellow students and that's exactly what you get at Health Ed.

Look out for Health Ed they are literally EVERYWHERE on campus! Whenever an event is going on you'll see them in their signature GREEN shirts/ hoodies.

They are on campus every day hosting walkabout games, where they dispense info by playing a games and giving away really cool free prizes. Every Wednesday they host Wellness Wednesday at both Keele and Glendon so if you have a question or you just want to play a game and win a prize walk up to the table and check them out!

If you want to drop by and talk to someone feel free to visit the Health Ed office South Ross 171. If you want to get in contact with them you can e-mail them healthed@yorku.ca or check out their AMAZING blog www.healthedyorku.tumblr.com or follow them on twitter @healthedyork

I've been a part of Health Ed for 4 years and I can honestly say that they are a great organization with great people. It's good to know that there are people on campus that you can talk to if you need them!

No ride? No problem! York will get you there!

Toronto is SUCH
a busy city!
Living in Toronto our lives are a constant hustle, everyone is moving from one place to the next and transportation is an issue that we can all relate to, especially as students! We are all trying to find the quickest, easiest and cheapest way to get from point A to point B!

York is known as a commuter school since the majority of it's student body don't actually live on campus but rather travel to and from campus each day. With this fact in mind I decided to focus my post today on the transportation options that York has available for students.

1. Keele - Glendon Shuttle:
Look out for this shuttle for your
FREE ride to campus!
Glendon was York University's first campus and is currently our Bilingual / French speaking campus located at Bayview and Lawrence. In order to facilitate the movement of students between the two campuses, York created a FREE shuttle.  All York students (with a vaild YU Card) can access this service, it takes about 30 mins (depending on traffic) to get from Keele to Glendon. TIP: If you live closer to one campus you can use this shuttle to get a free ride to the other!

2. York Univeristy - GO Train Shuttle:
This shuttle is a FREE service that transports York community members from the GO Train station to York's Keele Campus. Again it is a great option if you're trying to save money on gas, or if you're trying to reduce your carbon footprint.

3. Van GO Shuttle Service:
This is a mobility service that is designed to assist students and staff with disabilities to get around campus. The service runs from 8am-10pm, Monday to Friday. You do have to register for this service via the Office for Physical, Sensory and Medical Disability Services 109 Central Square.

4. New Campus Shuttle: Village Shuttle Service:
That's the Village in the background
in case you didn't know :P
This is the newest of all the shuttle services available at York. This shuttle service provides a free ride to students that live in and around the Village at York University. This service has 3 shuttle routes: 1. Village Express. 2. Village East and 3. Village West. All shuttles start at Vari Hall and then begin their specific routes around York and The Village.

If you want some more info on these shuttle services check out the following link: transportation

Even goSafe has a van!
Riding in STYLE!
The LAST mode of FREE transportation that I want to touch upon here is the goSafe program. goSafe is a free student escort program. Students simply call the goSafe number and two student staff members will pick them up, escort them from where ever they are to where ever they need to go. TIP: They will even wait with you for your bus or ride to arrive. This service runs all year long, they are currently operating on their summer schedule which is 8pm-2am 7 days a week but they have expanded hours during the regular school year. I personally use goSafe all the time and have found them to be an excellent service! If you want to find out a bit more about them check out this link to their website: goSafe

Moral of my story?

There are so many great transportation options available to you while you're at York that it would really be a shame for you to miss out on using them!
