It's QUESTION TIME!!

I have another blog and on it I put the word out that I'd be answering questions about life at York U here were some of the questions that I got and some of the replies I gave.

If you have any questions that you want answered feel free to message me here or on twitter. I'd be happy to answer ANY questions that you have! :D

Enjoy!

1. Q: Why should students come to York?

A: Why should students come to York? Some people will tell you “York has a good (insert major) program, and that’s why students should go there.” Or some will say “York is too close to Jane and Finch and so it’s dangerous therefore students shouldn’t go there.”

I say York is more than it’s location, it’s more than it’s programs. Yes it’s a great school academically but it’s also a great school socially. You are more than just the classes you take, and at York they get that! There are so many opportunities to get involved in clubs and organizations that make your university experience richer and more complete.

York is truly a community and that is what sets it apart from other universities. When you come to Keele or Glendon you are welcomed by the college affiliation system which links you to other students studying what you’re studying. Being connected to other students with similar interests helps students to not feel so alone.

Then you have Red Zone, the folks that help you in the summer to figure out what’s up at York and who are there all year round to help you out even if the only help you need is a direction to your next class LOL.

Of course we can’t forget all the clubs you can join via YFS or SCLD, with hundreds of clubs active at York students will be able to find something that speaks to them…whether it’s York is U or Running Relief!

York offers SUPPORT for it’s students, from the top administration all the way down to the T.A’s York wants it’s students to do well. I could go on all day but I’ll try to reign it in and just say one last thing. York is community minded and community centred and if you’re lucky enough to get accepted to York University, you should definitely take the opportunity to become part of this amazing community!

2. Q: What's Residence Life like?

A: Residence life is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. It is really convenient living on res, you can come and go to classes without having to wake up super early and you can stay late at school without  having to worry about catching the bus. In each res there are “houses” depending on which floor, building or suite you live in. The “houses” are great because you can get to know your neighbours without having to awkwardly knock on their door. The people you live with in res really become like family especially if you’re an international student and you can’t go home on weekends. I would highly recommend living in res for all first yr students!

3. Q: What would be your first tip in finding your extracurricular niche at York?

A:My first tip for finding your extracurricular niche at York would be to look for something that you are really passionate about!

Take your time, look around, check out your options. There are so many great ways to get involved at York that you don’t have to jump into the first club you find.

Too often people look for extracurricular activities that they THINK will make them look good to future employers. It’s good to pick things that will make you look good but remember if you join a club you have to participate; if you don’t L-O-V-E the club you’re going to resent putting your time into it. If you join a club or organization that you have a genuine interest in then you won’t mind putting your time into it.

But if you can find something that you LOVE that also makes you look good then that’s even better!

Check out all the clubs that SCLD has to offer; there’s really something for everyone here! http://yuconnect.yorku.ca/

Well I hope that you enjoyed the question and answer post. I only put three of the questions I was asked in this post. If you want to see all the questions and their answers check out www.wtwyu.tumblr.com for the complete list of questions.

Take Care,

Nicole
